I have always wanted a metal detector, so before investing in an expensive one, I thought I would order this one and see if it's really a hobby I want to invest in. It was easy to put together and is adjustable. It come with an arm rest that makes it easier to hold, but it's still a little awkward. I think that just might because I haven't used it enough. It was hit or miss when using it and the items I was detecting were on the ground, so I doubt that it will detect anything that is buried. I definitely need to spend more time with the instruction manual and practice more, but I think this will be enjoyable, especially since I am a beginner. It comes with a carrying bag and small shovel, although the shovel will only be good for lose soil. It also comes with headphones so you aren't bothering everyone around you.
I'm not an expert on metal detectors. Last time I used one I was a child and it was my dad's dectector. I just remembered having fun using it and it being an outdoor activity so when I saw this I had to order it for myself and my youngest daughter. So many kids these days are addicted to their screens and seek instant gratification with everything. We haven't found anything yet but it's teaching her patience and that good things will come if she has patience and works at it. So for that and for getting her up off the electronic this little new hobby is going well so far.
I got this for an 8-year-old who loves "treasure hunting" and was asking for a metal detector. As an entry level device suitable for a beginner, it seems to work well and has some nice features. The length of the arm is adjustable at 2 points, so it can be made shorter to work better for a child. There's also an "arm support" with a strap to attach it to your forearm to help with fatigue. (I don't know quite how to describe it, it's the red piece in the pictures.) I believe this will help it not be too heavy and tiring for a kid to use. It does have a digital display, but it's still very basic in functionality. It has several different modes (described in the included manual) and has a chart on the display to give you an idea of what it's picking up based on the number. I threw a few coins on the ground to see how accurate it was, and it seemed to be varied, but I didn't practice very long with it. It also comes with headphones and a small shovel, so it is a complete turnkey kit to go out and start metal detecting. According to the instructions you can program it to "ignore" certain metals and save your custom settings, so that seems like a great feature. Overall, seems like the perfect way to start getting into this kind of hobby.
It has been a while since I have had a metal detector and been a while since I used one. I can't give much technical information on this one, I haven't been to a place where I would like to use it yet. I have tinkered with it and it does locate simple things I've put under it, like regular coins. As you can see in the pics it has a nice screen with a lot of information on it. You can set the sensitivity as well as what type of metal you would like to locate. Once it has notified you of an item it has a PP (pinpoint) button that really tunes in to the exact location of the item. It measures about 40” tall when extended to the max, which for me is a little short, but not too bad, I am 5' 10” tall. It is comfortable to walk with and doesn't weigh much so it is easy to walk about with it, I can see myself covering a lot of ground with it with out fatigue. It comes with headphones and they are decent, they even have a volume control on the wire so you can control the volume very easily. It also comes with a little shovel / pick that is suitable for softer soil or sand, but in my yard, it doesn't help much, my yard is hard to dig with real tools so that's nor surprising. I like this metal detector and when I get to a place that I want to hunt for treasures I'll be using it a lot. It is a nice looking detector and well made. For the money I think it's worth it, especially if you are a regular treasure hunter. The bottom part, where the actual detector is - is water proof so you can wade out a little to test the water. When I find my cache of gold I will amend my review and let the world know just how good this device really is.
This is a serious metal detector for your children and grandchildren. In the grand scheme of metal detectors it lies at the low end of cost and quality. You start getting serious in metal detectors at about $300 and can easily spend $2000 on a top detector with accurate metal-type distinguishing and ability to work in water.But this does work. it's not fancy. It's not sophisticated. But it finds things buried inches deep in sand and dirt. You can use the included headphones or the integrated speaker to monitor detection. You can also monitor via the meter, though audio detection warnings are easier than keeping your eyes peeled to the LCD meter.I got this to give to a grandchild for Christmas and I am quite certain it will provide a lot of fun next year at the family trip to the shore.
