What Is an Articulating Borescope?

An articulating borescope, also known as a digital inspection camera, is a tool designed to visually inspect hard-to-reach or enclosed areas without disassembly. The term “articulating” refers to the ability of the camera probe to bend and steer using a control wheel, allowing visual access to sidewalls and off-axis areas. This is different from a fixed rigid borescope, which only points straight ahead.

Articulating borescopes are widely used in situations where direct line-of-sight inspection is difficult or impossible, including:

  • Automotive diagnostics – inspecting engine cylinders, spark plug holes, and exhaust components
  • Industrial equipment inspection – checking internal machinery parts for wear, damage, or blockages

How to Choose the Right Inspection Camera

Articulation: Articulating inspection cameras allow the probe tip to bend and steer, making them ideal for viewing sidewalls, corners, and off-axis areas. Non-articulating cameras are better suited for straight-line inspections.

Image quality and lighting: Higher resolution helps reveal small cracks, corrosion, or leaks, while adjustable LED lighting improves visibility in dark and enclosed spaces.

Probe size and cable length: Smaller probe diameters fit narrow openings such as engine ports or pipes. Longer cables are useful for deeper inspections in drains, ducts, or wall cavities.
