This is very useful for determining the quality of a paint job as it measures paint thickness. You will be surprised at the varying degrees of paint depth from one measurement to the next. Even small movements from left to right may produce large discrepancies. I was very surprised when I measured my vehicle against "old" paint versus "new" paint applied when unfortunately I was t-boned.The "new' paint was less thick than the "old" factory paint. One spot in particular faded over time and completely changed color but was easily picked by this device.I am a DIY guy and this is good tool to add to the arsenal.

For whatever reason, I thought something like this would cost a lot more! But, it's actually a very reasonable price for something this useful. It takes quick measurements, and is really easy to use. The kit gives you a case and also gives you calibration pieces and the accuracy of the gauge is really not bad for the cost. It's not labratory-precise, but I think for anyone doing finish work, it's certainly accurate enough. For used car shopping, it'll certainly be more than enough.

fun, but magnet is cheaper

really don't need something this fancy unless you're worried about burning through paint while correcting and exotic or rare car. this will give you a super accurate reading on paint thickness. only works on metal, fiberglass and plastic are outta luck. comes with detailed calibration instructions, various thickness metal plates, a case, etc... again, way over-complicated if you just want to know if the car is a cave and pave. any magnet will tell you if someone layed tiles over a previous encounter with a tree and theres 9" of mud filling the void. something like this would tell you if there 1/392" of filler which really doesn't even matter and only if it's perfectly calibrated and you know how to use it.
